Photography Narrative

Port Discovery’s photography should convey the brand’s fun, friendly, and inspirational tone. The subjects should be authentic, showcasing actual Museum members and moments. Port Discovery is a place of inclusion; the photography should represent a diversity of ethnicity, ability, gender, and age.

Stock photos are the last resort and should rarely be used. Port Discovery always prefers to use authentic Museum photographs, but if there is a necessity for stock photography, it should be natural and realistic; avoid unnatural poses and overly edited (“Photoshopped”) colors or contrasts.

Photography Style

Photography Dos & Don'ts

Lighting & Subject

Have bright, warm lighting with bright colors. Focus on the activity and emotion of the subject(s).

Avoid dark, dull lighting. Avoid photos that don’t tell a story, show activity, or convey emotion.

Foreground Subjects

Use a shallower depth of field with a focus on the foreground subject(s). It will blur distracting background objects.

Avoid a wide depth of field on foreground subjects. The image will feel busy and might have mixed emotions in the background.

Generations at Play

Port Discovery isn’t just for kids; it’s for their caregivers too. It’s an interactive experience between the generations. Do show engaged adults having fun with kids.

Avoid images of caregivers with their kids if they aren’t conveying Port Discovery’s fun, friendly, and inspirational tone at the moment the photo was taken.

Scene

When showing scenes, include people; it feels active and fun.

Avoid scene photos without people; it feels empty.

STOCK PHOTOGRAPHY

Select stock photos that are realistic, with natural lighting and poses. They should convey Port Discovery's tone.

Avoid stock photos with overly staged or artificial poses, dingy lighting, and unrealistic "Photoshopped" edits.
